A Hygge Weekend on the Flensburg Fjord: Combining Glücksburg & Flensburg
Glücksburg sits less than 15 kilometres from Flensburg – far enough for quiet on the fjord, close enough for a town with a distinctly Danish feel. A weekend that combines both is perhaps the most authentic hygge experience this side of the border.
What is hygge – and why does it fit so well on the fjord?
Hygge is not a marketing term. It is a Scandinavian attitude: cosiness without effort, togetherness without an agenda, pleasure without guilt. On the Flensburg Fjord, the setting for it comes almost automatically. The water is often mirror-calm, the villages are small, and the cultural proximity to Denmark is not performed – it has grown out of geography and history.
Getting there & finding your bearings
Arriving by train from Hamburg or Copenhagen, you change at Flensburg. From there, bus line 21 runs regularly to Glücksburg – the journey takes around 25 minutes. Drivers follow the B199 along the fjord. The two places can also be linked by bicycle: the waterside route is largely tarmacked and flat.
Friday: Arriving in Glücksburg
The weekend starts best with check-in and a first walk along the fjord. Glücksburg has no urban noise to shake off – the quiet is there from the first moment. The Ostseelodges directly on the water are made for exactly this feeling: wake up, see water, have no obligations. Those who prefer a more classic hotel atmosphere will find it at the Intermar. For dinner, Gudlak is worth it: regional cooking, a view of the water, no rush.
Saturday: Castle, forest, beach
Glücksburg Castle is the best-known landmark in the area. The white moated castle from the 16th century stands on an island in the castle pond and is one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in northern Europe. Guided tours run regularly; those who just want to see it from outside can walk through the castle grounds for free. Around Glücksburg there are also extensive forest trails suitable for cycling and hiking – hilly enough to be interesting, but not demanding enough to require preparation. In the afternoon: the beach. Glücksburg's beach is quieter than the larger Baltic resorts further south.
Saturday evening: Quellental or Glückselig
Those who want to spend the evening in Glücksburg have two more options with Quellental and Glückselig – both part of the Glück in Sicht group, both with their own character. Alternatively: simply wait for the sunset over the fjord. It arrives reliably.
Sunday: Flensburg
Sunday belongs to Flensburg. The city has a Danish character unlike almost anywhere else in Germany: Danish schools, Danish supermarkets, Danish street signs in some neighbourhoods. The old town around Nordermarkt and the harbour can be explored comfortably in two to three hours. Worth a visit is the Museumsberg, or simply a walk along the harbour promenade. Return to Glücksburg for check-out – or head straight to your departure.

- Flensburg to Glücksburg by bus (line 21): approx. 25 minutes, frequency 20–60 minutes depending on time of day.
- By bicycle: approx. 12 km, mostly flat, partly on a cycle path directly along the fjord.
- Glücksburg Castle: opening times and tour schedules vary by season – check directly with the castle.
- Best time for this weekend: May to September, though autumn has its own appeal on the fjord.
