5 Activities Around Glücksburg That Need No Preparation

Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord is not a place built around organised activities – but anyone who wants to arrive and get moving will find cycle routes, forest paths, a swimming beach and a castle right outside the door. Here are five things that work spontaneously and without a kit list.

1

Cycling along the Förde

The Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea Coastal Cycle Route runs through the region. Between Glücksburg and Flensburg, there is a largely flat, approximately 12-kilometer stretch along the water that can be explored even without your own bicycle – rental bikes are available in Glücksburg. The route is asphalted and suitable for all fitness levels.

2

Swimming and Strolling on the Glücksburg Beach

The beach in Glücksburg is within walking distance of the hotels. The water of the Flensburger Förde warms up to up to 20 degrees in summer. The beach is sandier than many of the Baltic Sea's steep coast sections and quieter than the large seaside resorts further south – no admission, no reservation required.

3

Visit Glücksburg Castle

The white water palace from the 16th century is considered one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. The castle park is freely accessible. Guided tours inside take place seasonally – inquire about times directly at the castle. It is only a few minutes' walk from the castle to the beach.

4

Hiking in the Glücksburg Forest

Around Glücksburg, there are beech forests that can be hiked without marked difficulty levels and without registration. The paths are partly hilly but repeatedly offer views of the Förde. Wild camping is possible in Schleswig-Holstein under certain conditions on private forests – for hikes, sturdy footwear is sufficient.

5

Day Trip to Flensburg

Flensburg is easily accessible by bus (line 21, about 25 minutes) or by bicycle. The city has a well-preserved Gründerzeit harbor, the Nordermarkt, and numerous Danish-influenced shops and cafés. Those who return will find dinner in Glücksburg at Gudlak, Quellental, or Glückselig – all three part of the Glück in Sicht network.
