Holiday with a Dog in Glücksburg: 7 Reasons Why the Flensburg Fjord is Perfect for Four-Legged Guests

Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord offers dogs and their owners long beach walks, quiet forest paths and a manageable town size that makes for stress-free travel. The shoulder seasons – spring and autumn – are especially recommended: fewer crowds, cooler temperatures and more freedom on the beach.

1

Beach in Sandwig

The beach in Sandwig is a public sandy beach located directly on the Flensburger Förde. Outside the main bathing season (usually before June 1st and after September 15th), dogs are allowed to run freely on parts of the beach. The exact regulations depend on the respective season and local municipal guidelines – corresponding signs are posted on-site.

2

Forest paths around Glücksburg

Glücksburg is surrounded by extensive forests that are suitable for walks of any length. The paths are well signposted and remain easily walkable even in wet weather. Dogs can explore here in a peaceful environment, without being exposed to the hustle and bustle of the beach.

3

Holnis Peninsula

The Holnis Peninsula is located a few kilometers north of Glücksburg and is a nature reserve with a steep coast and panoramic views across the fjord to Denmark. Dogs are welcome on the paths around Holnis; within the nature reserve, dogs must be kept on a leash. The steep coast is one of the most impressive natural features of the region.

4

Fördepromenade Glücksburg

The promenade along the fjord runs through the town and is suitable for dog walks all year round. It connects the beach, the castle pond, and the town center on a simple, flat route – ideal also for older or less mobile dogs.

5

Cycling route along the Flensburger Förde

The Förde cycling route connects Glücksburg with Flensburg on a scenic path directly along the water. Those who bring their dog along in a trailer or transport box can easily use this route. The route is suitable for everyday cyclists and passes through several small villages with rest and watering opportunities.

6

Glücksburg as a base for the entire Förde region

From Glücksburg, several dog-friendly destinations in the surrounding area are easily accessible: Flensburg (about 10 km), the Schlei region, and the Danish border are all within a short drive. This makes the town a practical starting point for multi-day excursions with a dog in Schleswig-Holstein and southern Denmark.

7

Peaceful atmosphere outside the high season

In May, June, September, and October, Glücksburg is significantly quieter than in the summer weeks. Fewer bathers mean more relaxed walks, less stress for sensitive dogs, and often more relaxed rules on the beach and promenade. For dog owners, the off-season on the Baltic Sea is often the most beautiful travel time.
